TSU defeats ULM 108-102 advances to CIT semifinals

By Darrion Gray

Cleaning up a mess is a thankless job, but someone has to do it. That’s exactly what Texas Southern did in the CIT quarterfinals against the University of Louisiana at Monroe. Previously 2-0 versus SWAC teams this season, ULM knocked off Jackson State and Grambling during the regular season. The Warhawks saw their spotless record against the SWAC and their championship dream crushed by the Tigers in triple overtime on Thursday, March 28.

In unwanted territory, our Tigers were still surrounded by familiar faces as TSU students travelled well to North Louisiana. TSU bought a section of seats and brought 50 plus students to enjoy the team’s postseason game. Before the game, head coach John Jones came into the stands to thank the students for their support. While in the stands he made a declaration, “We’re going to win this for you guys.” Of Coach Jones’ many traits, being a man of his word is at the top of the list. After winning the game and shaking hands, Coach Jones hilariously high stepping his way towards the crowd then struck a triumphant pose in front of the traveling fans. Clearly, he appreciated students that made the drive to an away game that wasn’t exactly around the corner, nearly a 6 hour trip. The team shared his sentiment. John Jones and Devocio Butler jumped into the crowd.

The Tigers of Texas Southern University will go on to face the Green Bay Phoenix in the semifinal round of the CollegeInsider.com Tournament Tuesday April 2 at 7pm CTS.
