Humbled by their loss to the Southern University Jaguars during Saturday’s Senior game, the Texas Southern Tigers knew they had to regain their focus for the next go-around if they wanted to stay in the upcoming SWAC Tournament.
Well, after tonight, that’s exactly what they did as they avenged their most-recent loss by defeating the Southern University Jaguars 80-70 in a game which featured all five of the Tigers’ starters scoring 10 or more points each.
Texas Southern led wire-to-wire as the only time they allowed Southern to at least tie the game came at the 18:30 mark of the first half for a 2-2 score.
Devocio Butler led the Tigers with 16 points on account of four 3-pointers, seven rebounds, one block, and one steal for the game.
Jeremy Combs, who was announced earlier today as the SWAC Player and Newcomer of the Year, made 11 points, three rebounds, one assist, and two steals in Texas Southern’s win.
“We just went out there and fought all night,” Combs said after the game. “We knew what we had to do to get the job done and if we fought hard all night, we got a great chance to win.”
Jalyn Patterson achieved his second double-double of the season through his 14 points and 10 rebounds. His last one came in the November 26, 2018 game against Oregon.
For the Jaguars, Richard Lee stepped up to lead his team with 13 points on three of seven 3-point shooting. In addition, two other players, Alex Ennis and Brendon Brooks, reached double-digit points respectively.
The first half followed the same script from Saturday’s game thanks to Texas Southern’s supremacy in the paint, besting the Jaguars both in points scored (26-10) and rebounds made (24-13).
