On February 6th, 2019, National Signing Day for college football, Texas Southern University completed their roster by adding the final five players to the list. Known for his recruiting ability, head coach, Clarence McKinney, brought a mixture of outstanding athletes, including five Division 1 FBS transfer players, five junior college players, and 10 high school players.
“Were excited about the whole class,” said Coach McKinney in front of a handful of journalists. “I think the players we signed – in the early signing period as well as this signing period – I think those guys are going to help us reach the goals that we’ve set.”
Coming from all walks of life, four of the 20 players have played in a power conference program, including Montel Parker, a wide receiver from Texas A&M and Michael Johnson, a defensive lineman from Baylor University.
One of the most anticipated signees for Texas Southern is Quarterback De’Andre Johnson from Jacksonville, Florida. A former Seminole at Florida State, he later transferred to East Mississippi Community College where he starred in the Netflix original series “Last Chance U”. Upon getting an offer from Florida Atlantic, Johnson completed a season before becoming a TSU Tiger.
Two twins, Jacob and Joseph Anderson, play defensive back and are also becoming Tigers after their journey came to and end at East Mississippi Community College.
Other players coming from division one programs are: Thurman Morbley a wide receiver from Texas State, and Michael Badejo defensive lineman form SMU.
Just about everyone is expecting a turnaround for Texas Southern as the Tigers have been trying to get a winning season under their belt since 2000. “You can show me all of these good players, but I need someone to hit come Saturday,” said TSU’s Interim Vice President of Intercollegiate Athletics.
