On February 6th 2019, National Signing Day, Texas Southern University completed their roster adding the last five players to the list. Known for his recruiting ability head coach, Clarence McKinney, brought a mixture of outstanding athletes, including five Division 1 FBS transfer players, five junior college players, and 10 high school players.
“Were excited about the whole class,” said Coach McKinney in front of a handful of journalist.
“I think the players we signed – in the early signing period as well as this signing period – I think those guys are going to help us reach the goals that we’ve set.”
Coming from all walks of life four of the 20 players have played time in a power conference program, including players Montel Parker wide receiver from Texas A&M, and Michael Johnson defensive lineman from Baylor University.
One of the most anticipated signee for Texas Southern is Quarterback De’Andre Johnson from Jacksonville, Florida. A former Seminole at Florida State who later transferring to East Mississippi Community College where he starred in the Netflix original series “Last Chance U”. Upon getting an offer from Florida Atlantic, Johnson completed a season before becoming a TSU Tiger.
Twins Jacob and Joseph Anderson playing defensive backs, also become Tigers after their journey came to and end at East Mississippi Community College.
Other players coming from division one programs are: Thurman Morbley a wide receiver from Texas State, and Michael Badejo defensive lineman form SMU.
Just about everyone is expecting a turnaround for Texas Southern as the Tigers have been trying to get a winning season under their belt since 2000. “You can show me all of these good player, but I need someone to hit come Saturday,” said TSU’s Interim Vice President of Intercollegiate Athletics.
